Kodak EasyShare M580

Kodak's EasyShare M580 delivers solid images and a nice feature set, including an 8x zoom lens, and easy photo sharing, for just $200.

One huge benefit of the M580 is the 8x optical zoom lens it packs into a 1-inch thick body. Its exact dimensions are 2.3 by 4 by 1 inch (HWD), and it weighs in at just over five ounces.

Top

The M580 doesn’t have the slim build you’ll get on some other cameras in this price range, but what the M580 lacks in portability it makes up for with awesome image quality, large LCD and 8x optical zoom.

Back

The M580 lacks the zoom in/out trigger on top of the camera that most manufacturers use, instead opting for a rocker-style button on the back of the camera.

Right

Taking photos with the M580 feels really fast, especially the shutter lag—the time from when you hit the shutter release to when the photo is actually captured.

This shooter delivers 8x optical zoom, along with excellent image and HD video quality, all at a price—$199.95 direct—that’s hard to beat.

Ports

Connectivity options on the M580 are better than most cameras on the market, regardless of price or type.

Angle

The camera lacks a few things picky photographers might want—a zoom trigger, optical zoom while recording, a smaller build— but at $199.95, the M580 will certainly give you a lot for your buck.

When disconnected from a computer, you can tap the “Share” button on the camera and it will let you flag photos you want shared—enter email addresses, or send them to Facebook, Flickr and Kodak Gallery. Once you plug the camera into your computer, the software will see the flagged photos and push them off to their new homes.
If the process of copying photos to your computer and sharing them via email or online websites intimidates you (and on most cameras, it should), the M580 is even more compelling.

Videos are recorded in high-definition at 720p30, and saved as .MOV files, which are accepted by Facebook and YouTube for quick and easy uploading and sharing.

Most elements of the M580’s UI are made up of black and white text with a red highlighter, projected on top of the image. It’s not flashy, but it gets the job done and makes theM580 simple and intuitive enough to operate.
At ISO 100, 200 and 400, images from the M580 are excellent. The higher sensitivities (required for low light situations without the flash), however, didn’t produce usable images at all.
