Motorola Titanium (Sprint)

With the Titanium, Sprint and Motorola insult Nextel users by throwing them an obsolete bone of an Android smartphone.

Angle

The Motorola Titanium, for Sprint's Nextel iDEN network, is a slab-style smartphone that's not nearly as good as it looks. The phone has a 320-by-480 screen and a useful QWERTY keyboard on the front.

Pantech Pursuit II (AT&T)

AT&T's Pantech Pursuit II is a solid messaging phone with a nice keyboard and a responsive touch screen.Though not much of an improvement over its predecessor, the Pantech Pursuit II is a good messaging phone for AT&T subscribers.

Keyboard

Sliding the Pursuit's screen up reveals a four-row QWERTY keyboard with matte plastic keys. They’re slightly raised and easy to press, and typing long messages was a breeze.

Back

The Pursuit II’s 2-megapixel camera takes decent photos. Images snapped outdoors were surprisingly sharp, though photos taken inside weren’t as good; they looked a little less focused, and blown out around lights.

Left

The Pantech Pursuit II measures 4 by 2.4 by .6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.5 ounces.

Right

The Pursuit II comes equipped with a great music player, but a proprietary headphone jack and no headphones in the box render it close to useless.

Samsung Freeform III (MetroPCS)

The Samsung Freeform III remains a good choice for anyone needing a lightweight, budget-priced phone that's great for texting.

Front

The Samsung Freeform III measures 4.4 by 2.4 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.3 ounces.

Angle

Samsung revised the Freeform's keyboard once again; while it was already pretty good, now it's like a 7/8ths scale BlackBerry Bold instead of a Curve, and I could type quickly on it without a problem.

Back

The Samsung Freeform III's 1.3-megapixel camera has no flash or auto-focus capability. Test photos looked soft and a little blurry for the most part.

Right

The Freeform III works as a music player in a pinch, but it can be a pain to use.

Samsung Dart SGH-T499 (T-Mobile)

The Samsung Dart's feature set would have been fine two years ago, but now there's virtually no reason to choose it over other phones in T-Mobile's lineup—even free ones.

Front

The Samsung Dart SGH-T499 measures 4.1 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.8 ounces.

Back

The Dart's 3-megapixel camera has no flash or auto-focus. Test photos were a disappointment, with considerable graininess even in well-lit interior rooms, and overexposed outdoor shots with blown out highlights and just average detail resolution.

Right

The Dart is made entirely of plastic, with a matte dark grey underbody and a black front panel.

Angle

The Dart's 3.1-inch plastic capacitive touch screen sports just 240-by-320-pixel resolution. That breaks many third-party Android apps and makes it tougher to navigate Android’s various scrolling menu panels.

Nokia N97 mini (Unlocked)

The Nokia N97 mini is an improvement over the original N97, and the free Ovi Maps GPS app rocks. But there's still not enough here to pull U.S. buyers away from other smart devices.

Open

The N97 mini's QWERTY keyboard is a pain to get out. But once you do so, you've got yourself a nifty little mini-laptop, thanks to the tilt mechanism.

Back

The back panel features a 5-megapixel camera sensor with a Carl Zeiss lens, and a surprisingly powerful dual-LED flash.

Front

The Nokia N97 mini is a small but solid improvement over the original N97, and now looks sleek enough to take on an Android phone.

Side

The right side contains a camera shortcut button and a volume rocker switch.

Colors

The N97 mini (which comes in three colors) runs Symbian Series 60 5th Edition; it's looking more and more dated, though that's mainly because Nokia is trying too hard to turn it into a touch screen OS.

Front

The LG Revolution measures 5.1 by 2.6 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.1 ounces.

Back

Colors were bright, but details had a tendency to blur on photos snapped with the Revolution's 5-megapixel camera. Shutter speeds were a bit slow, too, around 1.2 seconds.

Angle

The Revolution's 4.3-inch, 480-by-800-pixel capacitive touch screen is bright and vibrant, though it lacks the deep colors of the Super AMOLED Plus screen on the Droid Charge.
